Re: Band Fanart

It uses .eps I think, but I was mostly interested in it for vectorizing photos and just used to save a png version once I'd got the effect I wanted.

Re: Band Fanart

That's fine by me yikes)

Re: Band Fanart

Thanks! My version of PSP prefers the .eps versions for some reason.

Here's another set I've just found. I'll put the others up when I find them...

Re: Band Fanart

Bloody hell, you just might be my new hero.

Really interesting to see how you go about composing your work. When I get a bit more time I'm going to respond to some stuff and ask a few questions if that's ok?

Re: Band Fanart

Great job on the logos! Stuff like that is always useful, woot woot.

Of course, when you are ready- ask away. At the moment I'm knocking something up that might amuse everyone - I might save it for next Weekend cus I want to do some sound changes.
Tease - It involves a highscore board.

Re: Band Fanart

Really?

It's posssssible that you're thinking along similar lines as me.....

I don't have a board as such, but my picture is definitely related.

Re: Band Fanart

If only that ENO logo was in the shape of a square.
That would make the New Wave Jacket costume even easier.

Re: Band Fanart

Here you go then- just altered it to match the video- It looks rectangle on the jacket ( I couldn't tell if there was a black line around it, so I did both) anyway I got it as close as I can, you can make ant adustments if you have the right programs. Here's the links to the illustrator and eps vector file.........

and here's what they look like

Re: Band Fanart

Thanks for all those mbedd. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them but it will good to have them to play around with.

I found these somewhere...

God, that took longer than expected, and ballooned a bit from what I'd intended.

It's actually a bit of a riff on a poster I did for a pal's gig a while back, but since that poster was done while listening to Polysics, it seems fair to bring it full circle.

Really? It's not totally finished yet (needs a good bit of touching up and also scaling back in places), but it was in danger of making my eyes weep tears of blood if I didn't just upload it. If I have the time or inclination I may animate the wee Poly People too.

You guys are the first I've shown it to, so I hope you like it!
If anyone's interested then I can talk a bit when I'm not sick of the sight of it. wink

Re: Band Fanart

Wouldn't you know it? As soon as I posted it, I've realised what I have to do to fix the bits I'm most unhappy with.

Re: Band Fanart

ow thats cool! i really like your style, it reminds me of old lucasarts point-and-click games for some reason.

Re: Band Fanart

Got it in one!

Re: Band Fanart

I reckon any one of you guys could design the next Poly-album cover no problem.

Re: Band Fanart

I can't see that last picture.

Re: Band Fanart

I made a minor tweak around the time you viewed it.

Maybe it was that?

Re: Band Fanart

Oooooh wow very cool!!!! big_smile

(I can see it now of course)

Wow, I really like that. Can't wait to see them move.

Re: Band Fanart

Thanks guys. I'm glad you like it.

Though originally, I hadn't even intended the band to be in the picture, in the end it came out looking a lot less fussy than I'd originally gone for. Polysics were originally standing on a guitar-heroesque plane of the word TOISU! extending in multicolours into the distance, with a different pixel-art backdrop at the sides. The machine itself was originally coloured a lot more realistically too, but the whole thing just look overworked, wrong and far too confusing. In the end I had to pull it all back and make it a whole lot simpler, and I'm much much happier with the result.

The machine was drawn by hand and scanned and everything else was done on computer, including a few tweaks I made to the original art (I moved the vocoder mic down so it was in line with Kayo's mouth and I messed with the coinslot bits, turning the lock into a P logo and aligning stuff right). The characters were done super-low res and then scaled up to be the right size for the rest of the piece. I'm most happy with them, as I think they look different enough, and enough like the band, for the pixels I had to work with. All my layers were name POLY LINEWORK! or POLY GLOW! or POLY KEYBOARD REFLECTION! etc.

It sprung mainly from an idea I'd had when drawing a (crap) picture of Kayo with an Arcade Machine controlled by a keyboard. It's the best summation of what their sound is to me that I can think of. The only thing I couldn't really put in that you'll just have to imagine is that the machine is crammed full of saucepans.

That's for when it explodes.

mbedd: Sorry for taking an age here...

I have tried to grapple with Illustrator in the past. I love what I've seen other people do with it, and how it can give a real elegance to their work (and since one of my favourite artists is Mucha I kind of want to learn how to do that), but it really does just frustrate me, and I think I've learned it's just never going to be for me.

Someone I know sings the praises of using flash all the time, and now you are  too it's making me seriously consider it. I've done a tiny bit before (no more than a slightly animated cartoon head of my old boss) and it seems to be ten times as easy to use. Almost as if it knows how you're going to be trying to go about things half the time. Do you work exclusively in vectors with flash, or do you work in other stuff too? I'm pretty much exclusively Photoshop and have never done a whole lot (with real media or otherwise) than just linework and scanning.

I love Photoshop because although it's complicated you can be guaranteed there's about eight different ways to do whatever it is you're trying to do as long as you have a play about. But like I say, I'm looking to branch out a bit and Flash animation has always appealed to me.

Re: Band Fanart

Photoshop and Flash  are the main ones I use, depends on the job really. I like painting strange stuff like this...

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh83/mbedd/aliensmall.jpg

... in photoshop because the airbrush is pretty good, but Flash is my big passion though, I've been using it for about 8 years now and have liked every upgrade (apart from 5 which put coding above the artwork) I must admit it would be quite daunting to jump straight into Flash 9 now without seeing it grow. It may be best to ignore or the heavier coding elements and organise the desktop and windows to suit your needs. I still think the program doesn't need most of the stuff it has, but I think the designers were trying to get the attention of all the programmers who were used to C++ java and all that jazz. I do a lot of programming myself and find action script 1 and 2 perfectly fine for doing some very complicated stuff- it's very similar to the old BASIC that the BBC's and spectrum 48k's used to use. Coding aside Flash has so much depth to it in the graphics department alone - and of course it has fantastic film integration too. Work out a plan of what you want to create- let me know when you are ready and I'll give you a good idea where to start.
